The Academy was established in 1989 by instructors qualified in a variety of martial arts / combat disciplines from around the world. We offer high-quality, safe and fun classes in a friendly and appropriately relaxed environment. Our Senior Instructor, Ollie Batts, has spent more than a third of a century studying and training in the martial arts, and he currently holds instructor grades and qualifications in several different martial art systems.

We have an extensive range of training available including:
Filipino Martial Arts - Eskrima (Kali/Arnis), Pangamot/Panantukan, Dumog and Silat
Russian Cambo (Sambo/Sombo) & CombatSombo®
Korean Kuk Sool/Hapkido
Jun Fan martial arts & JKD Concepts
French Savate - Boxe & Defence (kickboxing and street defence)
Canne de Combat (cane-fighting) and Grande Baton
British Singlestick, Quarterstaff & Cudgel-play
and our own Multicombat system

Beginners are always welcome at the Academy, and in 2007, we will be running more of our popular introductory courses in martial art and kickboxing for adults. This year, we will also be running beginners martial arts & savate kickboxing courses for children.

We have an extensive Events & Seminars programme - the most recent events were a Savate and Canne de Combat Seminar on saturday 26th and sunday 27th May with Gilles Le Duigou & Philippe Aguesse, for photos, click here, followed on sunday 15th July by the Great Britain Savate Federation Assaut League Event 2. Sifu Rick Faye of the Minnesota Kali Group will be in Cambridge on 18th September for an evening seminar. Later in the year, we hope to host a seminar with Mick Coup (Core Combatives).

For information about the arts we offer, visit the following pages:

Savate Kick-boxing

Savate (pronounced sa-vat) combines effective hand strikes and dynamic kicks, and was a demonstration sport in the Paris Olympic Games in 1924. These classes concentrate on kicking and punching skills, mobility and defence. You can build up your fitness and progress at your own pace. We offer a separate 'sparring skills' class for anyone who would like to learn to spar, as well as sparring sessions for intermediate and advanced students. Several members of the Academy have represented Great Britain in European and World Championship competitions.

Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) - Eskrima (Kali/Arnis)

The Filipino martial arts reflect the multi-racial society from which they come - blending styles and systems, developed over several centuries. The principles of combat are based on angles of attack and defence rather than emphasizing whether your opponent is empty-handed or carrying a weapon. Doces Pares is probably the best known Eskrima system in the world. Founded in 1932, in Cebu City, by the top Eskrima / Arnis Grandmasters of the time who came together to pool their knowledge and skills. These classes include learning forms (patterns of movement), as well as weapon-based work with a partner.

CAMA Multicombat Martial Arts (multi-discipline arts and JKD Concepts)
These training sessions include both stand-up and fighting on the ground. You will learn effective striking skills, close-quarter trapping, joint locking, immobilisations, throws, take-downs, chokes and strangulations, nerve holds, submission holds, and escapes and reversals from holds - for competition or self-defence. For anyone wanting to compete: Sombo Wrestling is a competitive sport recognised by the UK Sports Council. We have had members compete in Judo and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) events also.

Canne de Combat (French cane)
Canne de Combat (or La Canne) is a traditional French stick fighting art consisting of striking techniques, blocks, feints and combinations. It is a long range, graceful art, involving stylish striking and athletic movement. In all free play (sparring) and in competition, padded clothing, gloves and headguards are worn.
