English Singlestick

Single-stick... a national game of very considerable antiquity, and at one time in great repute on our country greens (Phillipps-Wolley, 1898).

There have been many styles of stick-fighting in England over the centuries, ranging from the short weapon styles of cudgelling, backsword and single-stick through to the longer weapon styles of quarterstaff. The English have fought with sticks in self-defence, as a safer form of training for the sabre and, sometimes, for prizes.

The classic novel, Tom Brown's Schooldays, includes a detailed description of the rules and results of a prize-fight at a local Veast (festival).

In sparring, or competition, safety equipment is required. Minimum requirements for sparring include: hand protection for the stick hand and a fencing mask.
